DAYANA 1969 bay gelding (Oncidium ? Dicidiana)
Dayana was the first three-year-old to win four Derbys; the SAJC, the VRC and two WATC, continuing on to win the Perth Cup six days after the second of his two WA Derby wins. He succeeded in beating the 1972 Melbourne Cup winner Piping Lane in the Cup, who finished third, and broke the race record as well on a fast track. The records show he won three races in a row before winning the SA Derby, followed by the Geelong Derby trial, the VRC Derby - beating favourite Sobar (3rd) in Perth ? then the WATC WA Derby, then the WATC Australian Derby, which was invitation only and the richest purse of all the Derbys at the time once trophies were included. |
